Snoring: Not Just Annoying

January 21, 2012

snorerAlmost everyone has been annoyed by loud snoring at some point, whether by a spouse or family member or even the guy in the next apartment. It can cause sleep loss, crankiness, and even marital problems. It’s not just an annoying problem, though; in some cases snoring can be a sign of a more serious condition.

When snoring interrupts breathing patterns, it can actually be a sign of a more dangerous condition called sleep apnea. With sleep apnea, the snoring person actually stops breathing at random intervals throughout the night. Sleep apnea is linked to several health complications such as heart disease and stroke, because over years of oxygen deprivation at night several major organs are damaged. Without correction this damage will get progressively worse and health problems will emerge.

There are doctors who specialize in sleep disturbances, and a sleep study can determine whether you or your loved one suffers from sleep apnea. If sleep apnea is diagnosed, there is help available to both stop the snoring and apnea, and also to deal with any related health problems. With early diagnosis  and treatment, serious events such as a stroke or a heart attack can be prevented. In this case you will be glad you sought help early on, before the damage became much worse and endangered the snoring person’s life.

If your loved one is not suffering from sleep apnea, but rather just from regular, run-of-the-mill harmless (to them, anyway) snoring, there are a wide variety of snoring cures on the market that they can try. What works for one person does not always work for another, so it may take some experimentation to find the method that works best for you and your spouse or family member. In the meantime the non-snoring person may want to try wearing earplugs to bed, so that they can get a decent night’s sleep while searching for the right cure. Once the cure is found, you will both be much happier and well-rested.
